Impact & Outcomes

  • Platform used by millions during Olympics and major sporting events
  • Real-time performance under massive concurrent user load
  • Accessible live updates for users with diverse needs
  • Seamless experience across desktop, mobile, and apps

The Challenge

The BBC needed a platform to deliver real-time coverage of major events - from Olympics to elections - to millions of concurrent users. The system had to handle massive scale while providing a fast, accessible, and engaging experience across all devices.

Live events are unforgiving: performance issues during a crucial moment affect millions of users simultaneously. The design had to work under pressure.

My Role

As Senior Product Designer, I was responsible for:

  • Leading product design for the live event coverage platform
  • Conducting user research during high-stakes events
  • Designing real-time update patterns and notification systems
  • Collaborating with engineering on performance optimization
  • Ensuring accessibility under time-critical constraints

The Approach

Performance-First Design

Real-time updates for millions require thoughtful design:

  • Minimal UI overhead to prioritize content updates
  • Progressive enhancement for varying network conditions
  • Efficient data patterns to minimize bandwidth
  • Clear visual hierarchy for scanning updates quickly

Accessibility at Scale

Live events must be accessible to everyone:

  • Screen reader-friendly live region updates
  • Keyboard navigation for rapid browsing
  • High contrast modes for outdoor/bright viewing
  • Reduced motion options for sensitive users

User Research Under Pressure

Understanding behavior during live events:

  • Remote testing during actual major events
  • Analytics analysis of usage patterns during peak load
  • Post-event interviews with diverse user groups
  • Continuous iteration between major events

Impact

BBC Live became a critical platform for major event coverage:

  • Scale: Successfully served millions of concurrent users during Olympics
  • Performance: Real-time updates with minimal latency even under peak load
  • Accessibility: Inclusive experience for users with diverse needs
  • Reliability: Maintained uptime during critical moments

What I Learned

Designing for live, high-stakes experiences taught valuable lessons:

  • Simplicity Under Pressure: Simple patterns perform better when users are stressed or distracted
  • Progressive Enhancement: Not all users have perfect connections during major events
  • Testing Reality: Lab testing can’t replicate the stress of actual live events
  • Accessibility is Performance: Efficient, accessible patterns often perform better at scale

The project demonstrated that great design systems thinking applies even to high-pressure, real-time experiences. Systematic approaches to components, patterns, and accessibility scale from design systems to live products.
